If you are reading this, you probably just looked at the calendar and realized: The Open starts on Feb 26th, which has come around quick. Like seriously, where did January go?
Panic usually sets in right about now. You might be thinking about cramming in extra sessions, doubling up on metcons, or finally trying to learn how to butterfly pull-up.
Stop.
The hard truth is this: You are not going to get significantly fitter in a couple of weeks.
The hay is in the barn. Your aerobic capacity and raw strength are what they are.
But here is the good news: You can absolutely improve your score!
Preparation for the 2026 Open isn’t about building new fitness; it’s about sharpening the tools you already have. With the Quarterfinals Cutline back to the Top 25%, strategy and efficiency are going to matter more than raw horsepower for most of us.
Here is your last minute battle plan to ensure you perform at your absolute best when 26.1 drops on February 26th.

1. Stop “Cramming” Volume
The biggest mistake athletes make right now is increasing volume. They try to “make up” for lost time.
This is a trap. If you start doubling days now, you will enter Week 1 inflamed, tired, and prone to injury.
- The Fix: Maintain your intensity, but lower your volume.
- The Goal: You want to feel “bouncy” and hungry to train, not smashed. If you leave the gym feeling like you could have done a little more, you are doing it right.
2. Practice “Open Style” Logistics
The Open is different from a normal class. You have a judge staring at you. You have specific floor layouts. You have tape lines.
Start simulating this environment now.
- Measure Everything: Get a tape measure. Mark out 25 feet. Mark out the Wall Walk lines. Get used to the visual cues.
- Use a Judge: Ask a buddy to count your reps and, crucially, no-rep you. You need to get used to hearing “No Rep” without having a mental breakdown.
- Video Yourself: You might need to submit a video for Quarterfinals verification. Practice setting up your camera tripod now so you aren’t fumbling with angles five minutes before you lift.
3. Dial in the “Friday Routine”
In the Open, routine is everything. You need to know exactly what you are eating and when you are sleeping before you hit the floor.
Test your Game Day nutrition:
- What do you eat 3 hours before a high-intensity metcon?
- How much caffeine is too much?
- Do you perform better in the morning or at “Friday Night Lights”?
Use the next three weeks to experiment. Once the Open starts, change nothing.
4. The “One and Done” Mindset
This is controversial, but we stand by it: Plan to do the workout once.
Redoing workouts is a trap. It destroys your central nervous system and ruins your recovery for the following week.
- The Strategy: Go in on Friday. Give it 100% effort. Accept the score. Move on.
- The Exception: If you completely botched a strategy or got a penalty that knocks you out of the Top 25%, then consider a Monday redo. But 90% of the time, the first attempt is the best attempt.
5. Fix Your “Limiting Factor” Transitions
You can’t get stronger, but you can get faster between movements. The Open is won in the transitions. The athlete who rests 5 seconds between thrusters beats the athlete who rests 10 seconds, even if they are equally fit.
Drill this:
- rapid transitions from rowing to barbell.
- picking up the jump rope immediately (no chalk breaks).
- stepping up to the bar without staring at it.
6. Read the 2026 Rulebook
We know, it’s boring. But this is the 20th Anniversary season, and rules change.
- Check the equipment list (make sure your box has the right height plyo boxes).
- Review the video submission standards if you plan on qualifying for Quarterfinals.
- Understand the Top 25% cutline for your specific region.
Bonus Tips
The next few weeks are about confidence.
You have done the work. Now, it’s time to trust your training, protect your body, and get your mind right. The Open is the most fun time of the year… if you’re prepared.
And here’s the simplest “cheat code” most athletes ignore: pick the one movement that could drag you down the leaderboard, the one where you lose the most time, reps, or get the most no-reps. For most people, it’s something like Double Unders or Bar Muscle-Ups.
Don’t try to fix everything. Don’t overhaul your engine. Just practice that one movement until it’s less stressful, less sloppy, and less likely to explode your heart rate.
Because that’s what moves you up the leaderboard: not becoming a brand-new athlete in 2 weeks… but removing the one thing that’s currently holding your score hostage. Stay focused.
Rest up. Eat well. Relax. Perform.
We’ll see you on the leaderboard.
