The Quarterfinals Are Back: Your Complete Guide to the 2026 CrossFit® Season

The Open is back baby!

And this time, we’re going back to our roots. As we head into the 2026 CrossFit® season, the pendulum has swung again; but if you ask us, it’s swinging in the right direction.

Last year, we were sweating over a brutal 1% cutline. It was stressful, high-stakes, and some would say, a little exclusive.

This year? The game has changed again.

If you look at the details, 2026 feels like a celebration of the “classic” CrossFit® era. We’re talking about the return of the Top 25%, a massive venue change for the Games, and a competition structure that gives more athletes a shot at the next level.

This isn’t just about survival anymore – it’s about opportunity.

With the Quarterfinals officially back on the menu, the strategy shifts from “perfection or nothing” to “consistency and capacity.” But don’t get too comfortable; the competition floor is as fierce as ever.

So, with the season fast approaching: do you have a plan to make the cut?

Major Changes for 2026

1. Quarterfinals Are Back (Top 25% Advance)

Take a deep breath. The “Top 1% or bust” pressure from 2025 is gone. CrossFit® has reinstated the Quarterfinals stage, meaning the top 25% of individuals and age-group athletes worldwide will advance from the Open.

This is huge for the community. It bridges the gap between the “fun” of the Open and the seriousness of the Semifinals. It gives thousands of athletes a second stage to test their fitness.

  • The Cutline: Top 25% (roughly top ~50,000–60,000 athletes depending on registration).

  • The Vibe: This allows you to have a bad workout in the Open and still recover. You don’t need to be perfect; you just need to be solid.

2. Semifinals: In-Person is King

We are seeing a return to the “Sanctionals-style” feeling. Third-party event organizers are back in a big way (think Syndicate Crown, French Throwdown, etc.).

There is also a new “Last Chance” style Online Semifinal that takes place after the in-person events, ensuring the absolute fittest athletes who might have slipped up fill the final roster spots.

3. No Teams in the Open

Here is a curveball: There is no separate Team division in the Open this year.

Everyone registers as an Individual. If you want to qualify a team for the Games, you still do the Open as an individual, but the “Team” selection process kicks in later. This simplifies the leaderboard but means every athlete needs to focus on their own performance first.

4. The Games Move to San Jose

After a stint in Texas, the Games are returning to their spiritual home in California for the 20th Anniversary. The 2026 Games will be held at the SAP Center in San Jose.

Why does this matter to you? The “Shark Tank” arena is massive, and returning to California often signals a return to classic endurance tests. Think heat, hills, and heavy implements.

How You Should Take On the 2026 Season

At WODprep, we see these changes as a green light for athletes who love to grind. With the 25% cutline back, the Open is no longer a “do or die” sprint, it’s a test of your baseline capacity.

The Strategy: “Good Enough” is the New Perfect

Last year, one no-rep could end your season. This year, you have wiggle room.

Your focus should shift to:

  • Capacity over Perfection: You don’t need to win the workout; you just need to stay in the top quartile.

  • Redlining is Risky: Since you don’t need a top 1% score, avoid blowing up in week 1. Pacing becomes your best friend.

  • The Quarterfinals Prep: If you are a solid Rx athlete, start looking at Quarterfinal-style workouts now. The loads will be heavier, and the gymnastics (HSPU, Muscle-ups) will be more complex than the Open.

Predicting the Workouts

With Dave Castro heavily involved in the testing phase again, we expect a mix of “old school” pain and new standards.

The “Example” Classics we expect to see:

  1. Thrusters: Obviously.
  2. Chest-to-Bar / Muscle-Ups: Likely a gatekeeper in 26.3.
  3. Wall Walks / HSPU: Watch out for strict standards here.
  4. Double Unders: Crossovers haven’t gone away; keep practicing them.
  5. The Repeat: It’s the 20th Anniversary. Expect a classic repeat like 16.5 (Thrusters/Burpees) or something from the early days to honor the history.

The Bottom Line

The 2026 season is shaping up to be one of the most inclusive and exciting in years. The return of Quarterfinals means the “season” lasts longer for more of us. It means more workouts, more community throwdowns, and more chances to prove yourself.

Whether you are gunning for that top 25% spot or just here for the Friday Night Lights, the goal remains the same: Move well, pace smart, and have fun.
