Workout
5 rounds for time:
10 alternating dumbbell hang clean and jerks
12 toes-to-bar
14/12 calorie row
50/35 lb dumbbell
What’s up, athlete! This workout is sneaky. On paper, it looks like a nice little triplet. In reality, it is a grip-and-breathe test, and if you come out too hot, the wheels are going to fall off fast. The row is not your chance to show off. The dumbbell is not light after round two. And if your toes-to-bar start turning into a bunch of missed reps, this thing gets ugly in a hurry. Your job here is simple: stay smooth early so you can actually push late.
Warm-up
Start with 3 minutes of easy rowing. Then do 2 rounds of 6 empty-handed bootstrappers, 8 kip swings, 6 light dumbbell clean and jerks each arm, and 6 hollow rocks. Finish with 1 short practice round of 4 clean and jerks, 4 toes-to-bar, and a 6-calorie row.
Stimulus
Grip fatigue, midline control, and sustainable breathing.
Strategy
The dumbbell reps should be steady and controlled. Don’t rush the turnover so much that you waste energy fixing bad lockouts overhead. The toes-to-bar are where a lot of people blow this workout up, so break them before you have to. And on the row, I want you to think smooth, not savage. A hard row into sloppy gymnastics is a terrible trade.
Top tips
- Keep the dumbbell close and use your legs. Don’t make it an arm workout.
- Break toes-to-bar early if needed. Small, smart sets beat missed reps every time.
- On the row, focus on long strokes and relaxed hands. Death-gripping the handle is a trap.
Goal
Look the same in round five as you did in round one. Smooth transitions, clean reps, no panic.
